In Studio: Recipes for Systematic Change
The book In Studio: Recipes for Systematic Change, explores the Helsinki Design Lab Studio Model, a unique way of bringing together the right people, a carefully framed problem, a supportive place, and an open-ended process to craft an integrated vision and sketch the pathway towards strategic improvement. It’s particularly geared towards problems that have no single owner. Currently HDL is working on the themes: aging, extended well-being, and sustainability.
The book is available as free download, and also for purchase at selected bookstores.

Open Design Will Change Everything
At Open-Designism we find this great collection of Open Design examples. There, we learn that design is totally open as it bears 4 freedoms;
- Freedom to use, including making it
- Freedom to study how the design works and to change it to make it do what you wish
- Freedom to redistribute copies of the design, so you can help your neighbours
- Freedom to distribute copies of your own modified version, so the whole community can benefit from your changes

Barcelona Hosts Smart City Expo

In 2050, 75% of the world population will live in an urban environment. The constant population growth will require an urgent reflection on how these spaces will absorb and facilitate the life of their inhabitants. Fira de Barcelona’s new event, Smart City Expo & World Congress, which will be held from 29 November to 2 December, responds to each of the challenges that will arise with this scenario and redefines current cities. The congress will be the meeting point for sector professionals, heads of public administrations and experts, who will give the keys to understanding the workings and development of cities of the future, known as smart cities.
The concept ‘Smart City’ refers to cities that, seeking to increase the quality of life of their inhabitants, develop technological improvements in order to create urban environments that are not only more liveable but also more efficient in the management of available resources, whether they be energy, water or air quality. This need has led to high tech companies from different fields providing large cities with new technological applications, which also means a new business opportunity.

First Flash Build by Nodstrom Innovation Lab
Today we learned about Nodstrom Innovation Lab, a lean startup within the Fortune 500 company Nodstrom (fashion & apparel retail).
In this video, you can see how the Nodstrom Innovation Lab team performs a so-called “Flash Build”; similar to a flash mob but in this case they arrive to a retail without prior notice, deploy their material and aim to build a working app within 5 days, constantly iterating with the customers.
